What is Stem Cell therapy?

Stem Cell therapy is a game-changing regenerative treatment that can deliver substantial, long-term relief for patients who suffer from acute pain or chronic pain, as a result of a sports injury, arthritis, or certain spine conditions.

Stem cells help to create new cells in existing healthy tissues and may help to repair tissues in those structures that are injured or damaged.  They are the basis for the specific cell types that make up each organ in the body.  Injecting a Stem Cell-matrix into a damaged joint can stimulate the body’s repair process and provide some of the raw materials needed for these repairs.  As with any treatment, results will vary from patient to patient, but often patients treated with Stem Cells are surprised how different they feel just weeks after treatment. 

There are different sources of Stem Cells.  Dr. Enayati uses his patients’ own stem cells by harvesting bone marrow from the iliac crest (the back of the pelvis), a particularly rich source of Mesenchymal Stem Cells, which are capable of becoming various types of cells that are part of the musculoskeletal system, including bone, tendon, articular cartilage, and ligaments.  He then spins the bone marrow in a centrifuge to concentrate the Stem Cells before injecting the Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMC) into the patient’s problem area.  The entire process takes less than 2 hours and is typically performed under light anesthesia.

How does Stem Cell therapy work?

The injected Stem Cells promote natural self-healing.  Stem Cells are “building block” cells that are able to grow into whatever is needed nearby.  Stem Cells contain natural growth factors that, when injected into a damaged joint, can stimulate the body’s repair process.  The Stem Cell serum reduces inflammation, diminishes scar tissue, and accelerates healing.  In the weeks and months following treatment, the Stem Cells promote re-growth of cartilage, ligaments, tissues, and nerves.  Like with any treatment, results will vary from patient to patient, but patients treated with Stem Cells are often surprised by how different they feel just a month or two after treatment.  This simple procedure can deliver life-changing results, both in relieving pain and allowing patients to resume the activities they love.

Is Stem Cell therapy safe?

Stem Cells come from the patient’s own body, so there is minimal risk of rejection or side effects. Of course, there are some risks associated with any injection, but the risks of this therapy are generally considered low.

Stem Cells can be a great option for patients with allergies to medications used in other treatment options.  For example, a patient who would have a bad reaction to the corticosteroids or lidocaine used in a standard knee injection may still be able to benefit from a Stem Cell knee injection.

Is Stem Cell therapy better than other treatment options for musculoskeletal pain?

Can stem cells heal spinal injuries?
